Marriage Tastes Like Forever

Does marriage really matter? What’s the point? Why all the pageantry of a wedding? Why the formality? Why the travel from near and far to behold this event; why the expense? Does marriage really matter when marriages rarely remain intact, and relationships have digressed into come-and-go with no strings attached? Isn't marriage inconsequential in light of current observations of love and loss?

Dear White Church, Enter In and Grieve.

Dear White Church, Please hear me out. Please read to the end, and hear my heart. I’m your brother in Christ. I love you. I’m for you. You carry my blood in your veins and you worship my Savior. We are brothers and sisters, you and I. In this genuine, heart-felt spirit of affection, and … Continue reading Dear White Church, Enter In and Grieve.

The Bible & “White Supremacy”

About three weeks ago, while I was off the grid for a few days in the hills of Kentucky, a contingency of white nationalist, neo-Nazi and Ku Klux Klan members were marching across the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville chanting phrases of white supremacy and carrying lit torches in their hands. I … Continue reading The Bible & “White Supremacy”

Thoughts on Childbirth: Death and then Life

As the tears spilled hot down my face, and onto my wife’s bare shoulder, it was not clear to me the source of my deep-hearted and unstoppable emotion. Was it the squirming, gasping-for-the-first-breaths-of-life baby boy that had just been thrust to her breast by our team of midwives? Or was it the almost immediate dissolve … Continue reading Thoughts on Childbirth: Death and then Life

Joy, Love and Peace When Jesus is Absent and the World is Hostile

The following post is a rough transcript of a sermon that I recently shared with my Legacy Christian Fellowship family at the Humboldt Park house church on December 20, 2015. Joy, Love and Peace When Jesus is Absent and the World is Hostile John 16:16-33 What do I have to celebrate this Christmas when my loved … Continue reading Joy, Love and Peace When Jesus is Absent and the World is Hostile

To be much for God, we must be much with God

The following quote from Leonard Ravenhill in Why Revival Tarries was shared with me by my good friend and mentor, Sean Cordell. I thought it was worth posting here for others to read as well. No man is greater than his prayer life. The pastor who is not praying is playing; the people who are … Continue reading To be much for God, we must be much with God

Resting in Christ’s Righteousness

I never have to do a moment's labor to gain or maintain my justified status before God! The following is an excerpt from Milton Vincent's A Gospel Primer for Christians: Learning to See the Glories of God's Love, which I wanted to share from my morning with God today. I highly recommend this book for … Continue reading Resting in Christ’s Righteousness

Rich, Poor, & Uncomfortable Mercy

Loving your neighbor but showing partiality is like murder minus adultery. 8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in … Continue reading Rich, Poor, & Uncomfortable Mercy

God Blessed Me with Failed Plans

I thought I was in control again. Every so often, God, you wake me up with something providential or remind me of your sovereignty in your Word, and it snaps me back to reality that you hold the galaxies and the electrons in orbit. But in between those moments of divine clarity, I grow amnesic towards your might, … Continue reading God Blessed Me with Failed Plans
